Tropical storm moisture was pushed into our area today from Baja California Sur creating high clouds and humid conditions. There was no wind and the sea surface was mill pond flat glass. Total sightings included: 5 humpback whales and 2,000 long-beaked common dolphins. Captain Dave and his crew took the Condor Express to Santa Cruz Island and back.
The first hot spot was in The Lanes and just north of The Cave. Many hundreds of dolphins located the boat and came to play. Sea birds and California sea lions were also there and everything was feeding on anchovies. Soon 3 whales joined the fun and everyone had great looks.
The next leg of today’s journey included a tour of the northwestern face of beautiful Santa Cruz Island and a look inside the world-famous Painted Cave. Near The Cave 1 additional humpback whale was located and watched. Dolphins were also all around this location.
On the way home we encountered more and more dolphins plus a 5th whale. It was a lot of fun today.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
