Captain Colton found sunny skies and glassy seas all day. Abundant wildlife kept the Condor Express close to the mainland today. Sightings included: 10 humpback whales, 4000 long-beaked common dolphins, 500 California sea lions and 3 offshore bottlenose dolphins.
Our first whale was sighted just 4 miles out from the harbor entrance. It was an active juvenile that threw its tail a bit, did some trumpet vocalizations and made a couple of close passes by the boat. Common dolphins were the area.
A bit southwest, 2 juvenile whales were watched among lots of common dolphins. We were 6 miles southwest of Hendry’s at the time. Soon a single then another pair of whales were observed. Three juvenile offshore bottlenose dolphins rode our bow. (Offshores are usually in larger groups).
Southeast, closer to the NOAA buoy, 2 large, adult whales and lots more dolphins were encountered. Then, finally, 2 active juveniles that threw their tails finished out the sightings.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
