Two trips left the docks today, one at 9am and the other at 12 noon. The crew of the Condor Express reported excellent sea and weather conditions. Total sightings for the day included 11 gray whales and 1,000 long-beaked common dolphins. That’s a lot of cetaceans!
The morning trip spotted a single shy whale and then found a trio migrating together and socializing quite a bit. Behaviors included a lot of rolling around together as well as showing pectoral fins, tail flukes and, occasionally, their heads. The dolphins happened to locate the boat as we watched the trio. The three species (2 cetacean species and one human species) interacted and it was great to see.
Seven whales were encountered in the afternoon. First a pair of whales, then a trio and finally another pair were closely watched. It seemed like we had whales around us the whole time.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
