A giant blue in the breeze

Giant blue whale tail flukes!

2018 07-15 SB Channel

Skies were sunny today, mostly due to the fresh breeze which kept things blue.  The breeze also made the ocean surface a bit bumpy, but Captain Dave and his crew employed all their navigational tricks-of-the-trade to keep the Condor Express as stable as possible while getting great looks at the mammals.  The track was to the west end of Santa Cruz Island, south of The Lanes, and then running east from there.  Totals for the day include:  1000 long-beaked common dolphins and 1 giant blue whale.

Two large pods of dolphins located the Condor Express around mid-Channel and kept us company through the wind and waves.  These were marvelous encounters.  As the boat continued on its path to the east, a single giant blue was watched closely.  Again, great looks were had and the giant kicked-up its massive tail flukes in the wind…an awesome sight.

The NOAA marine weather has forecasted calmer seas for tomorrow…a good thing.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
