A friendly humpback visits the Condor Express in the Santa Barbara Channel

2021 09-27 SB Channel

Captain Dave reported calm glassy seas with a high stratus layer in the Santa Barbara Channel today. Sightings included: 12+ humpback whales and 3000 long-beaked common dolphins.

Six miles south of the harbor we encountered a nice herd of dolphins which attracted a pair of humpbacks. The pair was a mother whale with her calf. We had some nice looks before continuing on a southerly course heading.

South of The Lanes and adjacent to the pier at Prisoner’s Harbor (Santa Cruz Island) was the largest hot spot of the trip. We spent well over an our her because there was so much action. There were at least 10 more whales here (probably more) and all were very active and boat friendly. There was practically no stop to their behavioral demonstrations, such as: rolling around (often next to the boat), lob-tailing, chin-slapping and numerous close/friendly approaches.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
