Fresh air prevailed in the Santa Barbara Channel. Not only was it brisk and refreshing, but it did get a little bumpy as well. Captain Colton and his crew did their best to steer a course that provided the calmest possible seas as we searched for wildlife. Sightings today included three humpback whales and 500 long-beaked common dolphins.
The dolphins were located just 6 miles offshore and were very active as they played and leaped amongst the waves and swells. It was great fun watching these natural surfers in their own environment. After a bit of searching a large breach was seen out of the corner of our eyes and we headed in that direction to find a single, tiny, juvenile whale. This little beast did come very close to the boat for a friendly look at one point. We headed to the southwest and soon found two additional single whales. All the whales today were very small especially, the third one that looked like a calf that just separated from its mother. The last two whales had long surface times and we got great looks at them as a busted through the swells.
You never know what mother nature has in store.
