Epic conditions & Epic sightings After 17 days of waiting for the Harbor to be re-opened, the Condor Express ran 3 whale watch trips today (9am, 12noon, 3pm) with spectacular conditions.  It was a bright sunny day with temperatures in Santa Barbara in the 80’s.  There was little to no wind and the sea surface was flat.  What a … Read More

Two Gray Whales and Tons of Life Great, warm, sunny weather with clear skies and clear water prevailed in the Santa Barbara Channel today.  The Condor Express ran one trip, the 3pm adventure.  We motored east to the prime anchovy bait balls, and again the area was full of zillions of these little silvery fish being attacked by seabirds, sea … Read More

Out of the Mist

Out of the Mist There were very very calm and glassy sea condition today on the 9am and 12 noon trips.  I had to leave to catch the Joe Lovano concert at Royce Hall, but there was also a 3pm adventure.  In the morning the fog greeted us and the visibility remained so poor that you could barely make out … Read More

Lunge Feeding Humpback We ran two trips today, 12 noon and 3 pm.  Sea conditions were fantastic:  clear blue water, no chop, no wind, and bright sun.  Essentially both trips were identical and sightings were off the charts both times.  We ran to the east where there had been reports of large seabird aggregations diving and feeding on huge balls … Read More

First coastal trip of the season is off the charts. Gray whales, bottlenose and Risso’s dolphins, Dall’s porpoise and sea lions! It was definitely a “who’s who” among the marine mammals in the Santa Barbara Channel today.  It was a grey, silvery day that started out with a light chop and some misty drizzle.  Things quickly improved to become a grey, silvery day with mirror glass conditions and no rain … Read More

Sea Lion Masses Steal the Show

Sea Lion Masses steal the Show The weather was simply divine today.  If the Beaufort Scale people allowed decimals, it would have been 0 – 0.2 for the sea state all morning long.  Again the strong Santa Ana winds to the east of us kept our region sunny, warm and very nice for cetaceans and mammals in general.  All across … Read More

The anchovy populations took advantage of the glassy, sunny zero wind day to come up and bask in the sun. Perhaps they wanted to snack on a few copepods or other planktonic life on such a nice day. Little did they know that congregating on the surface would ultimately prove to be a very bad idea. Captain Dave and the … Read More

humpback whale

Ideal conditions again on the Santa Barbara Channel feeding grounds. Today we watched as 8 humpback whales and 6 Minke whales gorged themselves on anchovy schools. The humpbacks were once again lunge feeding on the surface for all to witness. At least 1,000 common dolphins were observed (plus or minus) feeding alongside the seabirds, whales and sea lions. Hope to … Read More
