The sun came out early and it was a beautiful day on the water. The ocean surface was glassy. Sightings today were fantastic: 10 humpback whales and 3000 long-beaked common dolphins. We stopped at three locations to do our whale watching. The first location was a few miles outside the harbor where we found three whales. The second location was to the west, a few miles off UCSB, where we located two more whales. And the final sighting was 12 miles south, near the mid-channel NOAA buoy. Here we found a group of five more whales. During this last sighting there were many close passes by the whales, including around the boat and under it. All this was enhanced by beautiful water clarity. Epic! As has been the case for the last week or two, there were huge amounts of dolphins everywhere we went today. This included times when we were traveling, as well as times when the dolphins joined the whales feeding below the surface. You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
