12 humpbacks including friendly Scarlet with this year’s calf.

2021 10-07 SB Channel

Seas were calm with a light chop and skies continue to feature gray, high clouds. Sightings included: 12+ humpback whales, 200 California sea lions and 3000 long-beaked common dolphins.

Our first pair of whales was watched just north of the NOAA East Channel Buoy amidst lots of dolphins and sea lions. About a mile away 4 additional whales joined our “closely watched” list. These first whales, and a pair we watched later on the edge of the northbound lanes, were moving around a lot, perhaps searching for widely dispersed food.

Captain Dave and the crew turned the boat shoreward and before long engaged with an additional 4 humpbacks. Among this group we, once again, found Scarlet and her calf. The calf got excited and did a bit of kelping. Then Scarlet, with calf, got very friendly and traveled up and down both sides of the Condor Express, and passed underneath us several times. She has done this for years…both species are lucky!
