Happy Leap Day! Three trips left SEA Landing with good results today. Skies were clear and sunny, seas were nice. Sightings included 2 humpback whales, 3 Pacific gray whales, 250 Pacific white-sided dolphins and 1000 long-beaked common dolphins.
The morning trip featured a long visit with two humpbacks. One was highly animated and breached many times. The two humpback whales also double-breached together a few times. There was lots of rolling around, pectoral fin-slapping and sideways swimming.
Noon featured a large herd of common dolphins and a single gray whale about 4 miles south of the harbor. In the afternoon two additional grays were watched, as well as a small pod of white-sided dolphins between the Carpinteria rigs and the shoreline. Clear water enhanced the view of whales and dolphins alike.
