Skies were overcast on the way out in the morning and sunny on the way back home in the afternoon. The ocean surface was mill pond flat glass all day. Sightings included 3+ giant blue whales, 1+ fin whale and 3000 long-beaked common dolphins.
Large pods of common dolphins located the Condor Express starting just 6 miles offshore then all the way to the eastern end of Santa Cruz Island and back. It was one of the largest assemblies of dolphins we’ve had lately.
The giants, both fin and blue, were located near The Lanes adjacent to the east end of the island. Three blue whales were watched but more tall spouts in the near distance were abundant. We also watched a single fin whale, but surely some of those tall spouts might have been additional fins.
A brief tour of the majestic sea cliffs and coves along the northern shore of eastern Santa Cruz Island include a trip inside beautiful Potato Harbor.
