Although a few tropical thunderstorms passed through the area in the morning hours, the rest of the day featured mill pond glass conditions with beautiful cloud formations reflected on the surface. Sightings today included three northbound Pacific gray whales and 100 long-beaked common dolphins. Two trips left the docks today: one at 9 AM the other at 12 noon. As fate would have it, two of the three whales that we watch today we’re located because they had breached repeatedly in the near distance. All three whales were great to watch and showed their tail flukes frequently. Geographically, one whale was found off of Mesa Road, another is located 4 miles south east of the harbor, and the third was right near the harbor entrance. The dolphins were found in one group towards the end of the morning trip and were spread over a wide area. They still found time to play with the Condor Express. The noon trip also featured a short discussion of the Summerland and Carpinteria oil rigs including their historical significance.
