Captain Dave and his renowned crew set a southwesterly course out of Santa Barbara today and encountered a little bump on the surface along with a clear but cool atmosphere. About 8 miles out the crew eventually located 4 humpback whales and at least 150 long-beaked common dolphins.
The humpback whales were found because one of the 4 threw its mighty tail around on the surface for quite a while and the monster splashes could be seen at quite a distance advertising its presence to all. Of course, this is probably yet ANOTHER one of the many simultaneous benefits of tail throwing for humpback whales. After a while with the whales in this area, several surfaced right next to the Condor Express and all-in-all it was a great day on the Santa Barbara Channel.
We are definitely hearing reports of both humpback whales and early southbound gray whales from locations to the north. The days ahead should be interesting and confirm what I always say…
