7 humpbacks, thousands of dolphins and more

2022 05-07 SB Coast

Skies were sunny and there was little to no wind. The morning trip encountered some residual bumpy seas from strong winds overnight, but by the noon excursion they had diminished quite a bit. Sightings were in the same general location on both trips: about 4 miles offshore from the harbor. Sightings were also very good: 7 humpback whales, 2000 long-beaked common dolphins and 100 or so California sea lions.

All of the dolphins were observed in the morning. A large hot spot was found with loads of feeding activity. The dolphins, sea lions, lots of seabirds, and the whales were all feasting. Five humpback whales were closely watched. There were two large adults, followed by another single adult, and finally a mother-calf pair. The female had an all-white tail. The juvenile did a bit of rolling and pectoral slapping for a few minutes.

Captain Dave described the afternoon conditions as “balmy,” and took the Condor Express back to the morning hot spot area. A different mother-calf pair was located and watched for quite a while. It was a very nice encounter. A bit further to the southeast we had a fleeting look at a shy adult.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
