2019 07-12 SB Channel
Captain Colton and the crew found patchy fog that came and went throughout the morning portion of the trip. In between times visibility was quite satisfactory. Sightings today were fantastic. Closely watched numbers included eight humpback whales, and 2000 long-beaked common dolphins. As has been the case lately, the dolphins were everywhere we went in the channel today… both with and without whales. The pods varied in size from several hundred to over 1000 individuals. There were three main locations for whale observations today. The sightings included both large adults as well as smaller juveniles. Early in the morning we had one whale, part of a pair, that made a very close approach and everyone had fantastic looks at this cetacean ambassador. Later in the day, when we were close to the lanes, a group of five whales were observed including one very active juvenile. The little one threw its tail several times and also made some very close and friendly approaches to the boat. Great stuff!
