8 Humpbacks and hundreds of dolphins

2019 03-31 SB Channel

Captain Dave and his crew closely watched a total of 8 humpback whales and over 800 long-beaked common dolphins in the Santa Barbara Channel today. Weather and sea conditions were absolutely gorgeous! Two trips left the docks: 9 AM and 12 noon. You can see where we went on the attached map from AIS.

On the morning trip the Condor Express ran directly south about 7 miles to an area just west of platform Habitat. Here we located a megapod of dolphins and 4 humpback whales. The whales consisted of two separate small, or juvenile, individuals and a pair of large adults. We had great looks.

On the noon trip, Dave ran the boat up the coast towards UCSB. Off Hendrys Beach, a small pod of common dolphins located the boat. Turning offshore, we quickly located 2 humpback whales, one of which we had seen earlier in the day. By the way, the animal moved over 12 miles during the short time we had between trips. Continuing south, on the outside loop, we found an additional three humpback whales. It was a wonderful series of sightings for all. You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
