2019 04-14 SB Channel
The Condor Express made two excursions into the Santa Barbara Channel today in search of cetaceans. Skies started out with a high marine stratus layer in the morning, then sun broke through during the afternoon. Seas were calm all day. 9 humpback whales and 50 long-beaked common dolphins were seen today.
Both trips today worked an area to the southeast we call “The Flats,” and each one started out with one of Captain Dave’s famous oil platform dialogues and close-up looks.
On the morning trip we were soon discovered by a small pod of dolphins just south of the platforms. Great looks were had of these agile animals in glassy seas. A bit further out two pairs of whales were encountered. There were a few surface lunge feeding episodes, and these are always amazing.
On the afternoon tour, there were 5 whales, two of which were a mother and her calf. Spectacular!
