Today’s trip to the western Santa Barbara Channel yielded 4 humpback whale sightings and 675 long-beaked common dolphins. Tons of sea birds and California sea lions were in the mix. Sea conditions were good, a bit breezy in the outer Channel waters. There was a large southwesterly swell, but this had no detrimental effect on the excursion.
A large hot spot was the focus point for most of the sightings today. The action was about 6 miles off the beach and east of Hondo. The hot spot featured lots of diving and crashing sea birds as well as hundreds of feeding dolphins. Sea lions were also feeding. The whales joined the banquet for a while then took off slowly towards the west.
There were several nice tail slaps during the time we spent with the whales.
