The stratus was thick, gray and much lower today. It was not all the way down to the water and the sea surface was glassy. Skies became partly sunny after 100p. Sightings included: 4 humpback whales, 250 offshore bottlenose dolphins and 2500 long-beaked common dolphins.
All of the action was in a productive area southwest of Platform Habitat. We made two passes through the area. Our morning encounter was full of dolphins, both common dolphins and bottlenose. The commons were around all day, but in smaller numbers than earlier this week. The bottlenose pod had lots of calves. We also watched 2 humpback whales here. One was large, the other small. Everything was feeding subsurface in a businesslike manner with loads of seabirds.
Dave pushed west to explore other known areas without much luck, so he looped around and returned to the same general vicinity as in the morning. Among the common dolphins and sea birds there were two adult whales and we had great looks.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
