A friendly Minke, a humpback and lots of dolphins in the fog.

2021 10-01 SB Channel

Thick fog, down to the deck, made it nearly impossible to see anything including wildlife. Captain Dave and his keen-eyed crew ran out the The Lanes and traversed the entire northern face of Santa Cruz Island. The fog finally lifted momentarily down east near Potato Harbor. Sightings today included: 1 Minke whale, 1 humpback whale, and 1000 long-beaked common dolphins. Our eco-warrior-crew also retrieved 3 deflated floating helium Mylar balloons and one large orange beanbag chair. Hmmmm….

South of The Lanes, near Potato Harbor the sun began to burn through the stratus. We watched hundreds of scattered dolphins and a single juvenile humpback whale. The young whale was easy to watch as the seas were relatively calm.

On the way home, just 2 miles out from Santa Barbara Harbor, one of the friendly Minke whales that reside in that area located the Condor Express and made numerous friendly approaches. It swam up and down our sides and surfaced a few times near the bow. What a wonderful animal this is!
