Captain Eric and the crew fired up a whole bunch of cool cetacean sightings on today’s excursion. 500 long-beaked common dolphins were watched in patches of various sizes. A Minke whale came up near the boat a few times. And down in The Flats we got great looks and a mother humpback whale and her calf. In addition to a few surface “chomp and scoop” events, the two were diving for submerged anchovy schools. The calf got very frisky and put on a wonderful show. It spy-hopped several times, breached twice, did some kelping (rolling in the kelp paddies), and slapped both its pectoral flukes AND its tail. It was showtime again on a calm ocean with bright sun and stellar water clarity which enhanced the whale watching.
