A gorgeous day full of cetaceans.

2017 04-18 SB Coast

Captain Dave encountered 3 gray whales and 200 long-beaked common dolphins on his one and only excursion today along the western Santa Barbara shores.  The day started out a bit drizzly with calm seas, and ended sunny with seas that were still calm.  It was a gorgeous day full of cetaceans.

12 noon A mother gray whale and her calf were spotted west of the old lighthouse and we followed them west as the calf rolled around, spy hopped and generally enjoyed life in the kelp forest.  Soon a single yearling caught up with the original pair and became a trio for a while.  Later, near UCSB, Dave and his crew were surrounded by a nice herd of dolphins.  The dolphins were spread out and feeding on isolated patches of anchovies.  They were accompanied by various hungry sea birds.
