A great day in the Santa Barbara Channel

2017 08-11 SB Channel

Captain Dave made a run towards the west again today but had to throttle-down a tad due to a moderate on-coming chop.  The sun was bright and sunny all day, and, together with the breeze, resulted in good conditions for sighting animals.  Today we closely watched:  2 Minke whales, 1,500 long-beaked common dolphins, and 8* humpback whales.  It was a great day in the Santa Barbara Channel.

It took a while to get located on the wildlife as most of it was south of Platform Holly.  The first group of feeding animals was southeast of the rig where many hundred dolphins and at least 4 humpback whales were feeding below the surface.  The whales and dolphins were all moving to the east.

The second group was southwest of the rig and consisted of many humpback whales including *several more in the distance.  Dolphins by the hundreds were also active here at the second zone.  There were a couple of nice surface lunge feeding episodes here as well.  Minke whales patrolled the periphery.
