2024 10-09 SB Channel
Captain Danny and the crew reported overcast (but no foggy) skies with calm seas. A small, long-period west swell rolled through The Channel. Sightings were phenomenal today: 4800 common dolphins, 12 humpback whales, 1 Minke whale and 2 Ocean sunfish (Mola mola).
We started on a southeasterly heading in the general direction of Platform Charlie. While still north of the rigs, we had a good look at a small (dinner plate size) Ocean sunfish (Mola mola). Soon thereafter we encountered our first dolphin herd, about 300 animals. Two miles later a megapod of 1500 located the boat. Deckhand and 2nd Captain Benson spotted a tail fluke in the distance, and off we went. On the way, we saw a second small sunfish.
Two miles later we were north of the Kelp Farm, and located a trio of humpback whales plus, in the same area, three additional, single whales. Good looks were had by all. Moving south of The Farm, we were attracted to a pectoral-fin slapping whale that was, as we soon discovered, part of a foursome of humpbacks. Two of the four mugged the Condor Express twice, and one breached very close to the boat. As we were on station, a single friendly Minke whale swam by the boat twice. We moved west only to find additional humpbacks.
As we started our slow departure and eventual trip home, yet another megapod of dolphins found us.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
