Image: mating pod of three gray whales
2023 03-16 SB Coast
Two trips left the docks, 9a and 12n. Seas were calm. Skies were overcast, but there was no rain. A light wind became moderate by the afternoon. Sightings were phenomenal: 6 Pacific gray whales.
9am: After scouting the coastal kelp beds then turning offshore around Goleta Bay, we eventually located and watched 3 adult gray whales. The trio had amorous intentions and did nothing migratory. Instead, we watched a lot of close encounters, head lifts, rolling and, eventually, some pink Floyd.
On the mid-day excursion, we followed a similar path and found another trio similarly engaged about 4 miles south of Coal Oil Point. Again, rolling, touching bodies, and more Floyd appearances.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
