A sea lion mob, a dolphin megapod, plus 6 humpbacks!

020 02-07 SB Channel

Light and variable winds along with calm seas and blue skies provided a great backdrop to all our wonderful cetacean sightings. We watched six humpback whales, 3000 long-beaked common dolphins and 100 California sea lions. As happened yesterday, a huge mega pod of dolphins located the Condor Express just a few miles out from the harbor entrance. Although the pod was scattered over several miles of territory, there was some feeding going on, and some bait on the surface, and sure enough, it wasn’t long before our first humpback whale appeared in the midst. After great looks of the dolphin herds and the whale, Captain Dave and the crew pushed offshore to Santa Cruz Island where they we ran a tour of the central region of the north coast including a look at beautiful Pelican Bay. Not far from Pelican there was one large mob of sea lions working together in unison to locate and feed on anchovy schools. As we moveg south of The Lanes, we saw two additional whales and then a little further out from the boat or three more.
