A single noon excursion gets great looks at humpbacks, grays, Minkes and dolphins too.

A single 12noon trip hit the jackpot today. It was glass flat until the end of the trip, when sunshine gave way to a few in-coming rain squalls and wind. Sightings for the trip included: 2 Minke whales, 3 humpback whales, 2 gray whales and 500+ long-beaked common dolphins.

Just 4 miles southeast of the harbor we watched two separate Minke whales. One was larger than the other and we had good looks at both. Meanwhile, our eagle-eyed deckhand, Eddie, spied a spout nearby.

Another mile to the southeast found us off Montecito with a juvenile humpback. It hung out with the Condor Express and got friendly. (see today’s photo for an example).  We moved west where Eddie (again) located a trio of whales: one gray whale accompanying 2 humpback whales. Almost immediately one humpback took off for a monster breach. We watched the group go through the kelp farm. Yikes! Just 100 yards away we watched another gray whale.

On the way home, a mega pod of dolphins located the boat. The pod was spread out over a mile of water and, again, great looks were had by all.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
