Skies were sunny all day with a moderate breeze picking up later in the trip and a light chop on the water. Sightings were phenomenal: 9 humpback whales, 5000 long-beaked common dolphins, 75 Risso’s dolphins, and 100 California sea lions.
10 miles south of Hope Ranch we encountered the first group of common dolphins. It was a mega pod with 1000 or more individuals. Good looks were gad by all as they rode our bow, side, and stern waves. Moving south, we found more common dolphins and, our first three whales were in the mix. We started out with one juvenile humpback whale and followed that up with two additional whales in the area. After a wonderful sighting captain Colton moved the boat further to the west. Here 2 more individual whales included one giant whale with white patches all over her body… Identification is pending!
Near The Lanes, we found 2 more humpbacks, this (time both were juveniles) loads more common dolphins, and a nice sized pod of 75 Risso’s dolphins. It was an exciting area!
On the way home, not far from Platform Habitat, we were able to watch our final 2 humpback whales. Wow, what a day!
