Active humpbacks and thousands of dolphins on a bumpy day

Captain Eddy and the crew ran south and found wildlife. The second half of the trip was spent moving northwest to the Campus Point area. Seas were a bit rough, but the talented Captain worked his magic to produce a memorable wildlife adventure. Sightings included: 2000 common dolphins and 3 humpback whales (we closely watched two).

Just past the Kelp Farm on our southerly course out of the Harbor, a small pod of dolphins inaugurated the wildlife sightings. We’d find more, and large groups a bit further south while watching the humpbacks.

Our first whales consisted of a pair, and probably one of the pairs we watched yesterday as one of the individuals repeated that “trap feeding” behavior described in yesterday’s report. The pair was boat friendly and we also saw some wonderful pec-slapping. (See today’s photo for an example).  A third whale was in the area but we did not get set up on it before moving northwest.

Campus Point produced some large pods of surface feeding dolphins. Bait balls were visible on the surface.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
