2019 05-28 SB Channel
Sunny skies and light winds prevailed in the Channel today. Captain Dave and his crew headed south to the mid-Channel region southwest of Platform Habitat. Sightings were phenomenal again today with10+ humpback whales and 400 long-beaked common dolphins watched closely.
Northern anchovy bait balls were spotted all over the surface today. Many were under attack by sea lions, sea birds and dolphins. After searching these hot spots for a while, the tall spouts appeared and were also feeding on the anchovy resource. Several instance of sideways surface lunge-feeding were observed. We even stopped and watched the dolphins feeding, taking advantage of the calm seas and clear water. Whales were spotted as singles, pairs and a group of 4 (quadpod). It was a spectacular day with amazing sightings. We reported watching 10 whales, but there were many more in the area.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
