Clear, sunny skies and calm seas prevailed once again in the beautiful Santa Barbara Channel. A massive feeding hotspot was located and resulted in close observations of 10+ humpback whales and 2500 long-beak common dolphins. It was an epic cetacean-filled day.
All the action was located near the southbound shipping lanes near Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island. All of the wildlife was busy feeding on northern anchovy schools… including the whales and dolphins alike.
During this feeding frenzy, several Whales breached, others slapped their chins and generally demonstrated excited behavior. After a while Captain Dave left the hotspot area and took the Condor Express on a tour of lovely Pelican Bay. Santa Cruz Island history buffs will remember that Pelican what is the home of a hotel ever built and the place was crawling with movie stars and intrigue.
After leaving Pelican, on the way home, we pass back through the humpbacks and dolphins once again. It was utterly amazing.
