Another mid-Channel cetacean fest!

2019 10-02 SB Channel

It was definitely a mid-Channel Cetacean Fest. With 11+ humpback whales, 250 long-beaked common dolphins and 50 Risso’s dolphins, there was plenty to watch and enjoy. Seas were calm. Skies were sunny and blue. Captain Dave said one could clearly see all 4 islands.

The fun began southwest of Habitat with 3 adult whales. A pair was soon joined by a third, and after some lengthy subsurface feeding and relocating, they split up again and went off in different directions.  Soon thereafter a nice pod of common dolphins located us and we watched them ride our bow, side and stern waves.  It is always a treat to see these animals, especially in the bright sunshine!

Moving south and into The Lanes, a region with many whales was discovered. We had time to closely watch 6 of them, but many more were in this area of the mid-Channel. There was a bit of fun kelping observed as this group appeared to be diving shorter and for less time than the morning trio. Several distant breaches also called attention to more whales in the nearby.

After a while another pair of whales came through the area with similar dive and activity patterns. And to top things off, we watched at least 50 Risso’s dolphins here too, albeit quite spread out. It is great to see these big, white dolphins.
