Blue whales in the far eastern Channel

2018 07-14 SB Channel

All though skies were sunny today, it got a bit breezy on the way home and maybe even a little bit bumpy. Captain Dave and his crew went to the usual giant whale hot spot location near Santa Cruz Island only found one whale there.  We had some nice looks at it, but he moved the Condor Express further east until he reached an area near Arch Rock, Anacapa Island. Totals for the day included: 4 blue whales and 200 long-beaked common dolphins.

The high point of the trip was the appearance of a mother blue whale with her calf in the midst of the of the Anacapa Island blue whale sighting. The calf was curious and, even though it was a little windy, everyone got great looks.

It is always great to see tall blue whale spouts when the wind is blowing the spray asunder.
