A cruise ship load went whale watching and had amazing sightings. Skies were blue, and the wind did not kick up until the afternoon. Closely watched species were 1500 long-beaked common dolphins and 5 humpback whales.
The first 3 whales were located about 10 miles out, and spread across a 3 mile swath with plenty of dolphins. One breached several times after we had pulled away…they are “sad to see us go” sometimes. (I made that up).
About 2 miles north and at the start of our trek home, two additional whales were seen at a distance surface lunge feeding. We move in slowly and had some wonderful looks at this dramatic feeding behavior. This area was filled with seabird and sea lion activity.
