Happy Father’s Day!
Captain Colton and the crew of the Condor Express reported super conditions in the Santa Barbara Channel today. Although there was a marine stratus layer (so typical of June), the surface of the ocean was mill pond flat glass. Sightings included: 1 fin whale, 4 blue whales and 2500 long-beaked common dolphins.
Although dolphins were around in smaller groups all day, particularly around the whales, we did encounter two larger groups. About one mile outside of the harbor as we started the trip, two large pods, one a nursery pod, located the boat. Great looks were had by all. Conversely, on the way home, a legitimate megapod with at least 2000 individuals crossed our path. They were extremely active, especially riding the waves that the Condor Express created.
The great whales were located between Santa Cruz Island and The Lanes, and from the middle of the island west to the Painted Cave area. The eastern sightings included some very nice tail flukes and one blue whale with an unusually tall/big dorsal fin. Later, in the west, one of the giant blue whales and a fin whale were both followed during a period of active surface feeding. The fin whale was described as keeping up with the Condor at 7 knots while upside down and feeding close to the boat for quite a long period of time. Outstanding!
