Wednesday, August 31, 2016 – It was a bright sunny day in the Santa Barbara Channel, and this was partly due to a breeze which blew the clouds away and created a medium bumpy surface. Later the wind increased and Captain Dave altered his course to keep things as comfortable as possible. Sightings for the day included 3 humpback whales and 500 long-beaked common dolphins.
Our first stop was out on the 50-fathom curve where hundreds of dolphins found the boat and enjoyed riding along with us to the delight of their fans. Moving west from dolphin pod to dolphin pod on the 50, one feeding pod attracted our first humpback whale. It was a very large animal and easy to watch.
Further west hundreds more dolphins were all around the Condor Express, until finally the seas got a bit more bumpy and, as previously stated, Dave turned east. Down east, among the dolphins, two additional humpback whales were encountered and the duo soon approached the boat very closely.
