Dense fog in the morning, less so in the afternoon. Humpback whales and Dall’s porpoise today.

As you probably already know from reading the title, Captain Eddy and the crew ran two trips today. The morning experienced dense, near zero visibility fog, but that improved in the afternoon. Total sightings for the day: two humpback whales and 10 Dall’s porpoise.

The morning humpback whale was very large and it was found 11 miles south of The Harbor. It spent a lot of time underwater and was especially difficult to keep up with, given the fog. On the way home, a pod of Dall’s porpoise came out of the fog to make several friendly approaches and ride our bow for quite a while. Always fun to see!

We found our afternoon whale 9 miles from home, and a little bit west of the morning encounter. The whale zigzagged around and we had to put in maximum effort to stay with it. At one point, the crew retrieved a deflated floating mylar balloon from the ocean surface on one side of the boat, while we were watching the whale on the other side.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
