Dolphins plus 9 humpback whales; 2 of the largest whales mugged the Condor Express!

2021 06-04 SB Channel
Nine humpback whales, 1000 long-beaked common dolphins and 20 offshore bottlenose dolphins were closely watched today. Captain Dave traversed the Channel under a high, thin stratus layer. Seas were extremely calm, again.
Our first whale encounter took place after we had a nice look at a few scattered dolphins. While enjoying this whale’s company, a large aggregation of seabirds about a mile away let us to a group of 4 more humpback whales. Two of the quartet were very large adult whales and practically immediately they set course for the Condor Express and mugged us for a long time. I’m certain the whales learned a lot about their fan club just as we did about them.
We moved over to the “whale nursery grounds,” aka the West End of Santa Cruz Island where we encountered some rather uncharacteristically shy offshore bottlenose dolphins and solo whale. Nearby we saw tall spouts which came from another quartet of whales. Two of the four were Scarlet and her calf. The calf got excited for a few moments and did a bit of tail-throwing.
