Skies were blue and sunny. Seas were nicer in the morning close to shore. Sightings included 2 humpback whales and 2000 long-beaked common dolphins.
Captain Dave and his crew ran south and found a nice hot spot with plenty of dolphins and seabird activity on the southern edge of The Lanes. Soon a distinctive juvenile humpback popped up and we watched it for quite a while. It had a white tail and both sides of its long pectoral flippers were also white. This made the little whale easy to watch underwater as the light was reflected back off its fins. Some surface activity was watched and included some lunge feeding, rolling around and spending time on its side with one pectoral fin in the air (waving to its fans?).
Moving east then south we had more dolphin companionship and finally a second whale. This one was a large adult humpback. It spent its time feeding beneath the surface and out of view. But the frequent dives gave everyone nice looks at its tail flukes.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
