9a and 12n excursions left the harbor with glassy seas all day. The morning trip experienced some dense fog at times, but by noon all was sunny and bright. A slow rolling swell from the west bothered no one. Sightings included 11 humpback whales and 300 California sea lions.
On both trips a substantial number of humpback sightings took place about 3 or 4 miles south of UCSB. On the morning run we initially found a trio that included one huge adult and then found a cow-calf pair. At noon, two pairs of whales were in that same zone and were surrounded by California sea lions. Other whales (2) were observed a few miles outside the harbor as the morning trip concluded.
What a great time for humpback whales!
