There was a state of zero, AKA we had mirror glass flat seas. A high stratus layer gave things a light gray hue. Sightings were phenomenal with 12+ humpback whales and 5000 long-beaked common dolphins.
Captain Dave and the crew headed southwest and ended up spending the entire trip on a massive congregation of whales and dolphins southwest of Platform Holly. There were 10 whales here with more in the near distance. At least 5000 dolphins were here, too. We watched the endless variety of whale behaviors including: sideways swimming (see today’s photo), close and friendly encounters, and several breaches. One particularly active whale, identified as “corduroy” by our friend Mark using HappyWhale…it went on a 20-minute lob-tailing spree, took a little break, then resumed. Mind boggling.
On the way home we saw 2 more whales but did not stop due to lack of time.
You never know what mother nature has in store.
