Five gray whales

2018 03-15 SB Coast – A total of five gray whales were closely watched on our morning excursion.  It was a brisk but spectacular day along the coast.  Winds and seas were fresh, and the view of the snow-capped peaks in the back country of our Santa Ynez Mountains was awesome, too.

The first pair of whales (see pair of gray whales in the photograph above) were encountered near the campus of UCSB, about 2½ miles offshore.  Great looks were had before the winds increased and motivated Captain Dave to head downwind to the east.

On our way east, a trio of whales were found coming at us…heading west…again, about 2½ miles offshore from Hope Ranch.  The three were fun to watch and put the finish on a great trip.
