Four different species of whales, and a dolphin species as well, made for a great excursion today. There was a light cloudy layer in the sky all day, but seas were calm and the water was clear. Captain Eric and his crew took the Condor Express south to the mid-Channel region and everyone had a blast. Totals for the day included: 5 blue whales, 1 fin whale, 1 Minke whale, 2 humpback whales and 500 long-beaked common dolphins.
Small groups of 50 or so dolphins were around all day, especially when we located whales. South of the harbor, on the 50-fathom line, dolphins were active and a small, juvenile humpback came up in their midst. This humpback showed its tail flukes regularly, breached several times, and threw its tail around. It was a very active humpback.
Several miles south of the first sighting more dolphins and a much larger humpback whale were watched. The group was moving slowly to the east. A single feeding Minke whale put in an appearance in this location too.
Further south our deckhand Tasha spotted tall spouts which turned out to be the blue and fin whales. The blues were large and dove asynchronously. This meant a blue whale was always up and ready to be watched closely. The fin whale was a juvenile…quite small. More dolphins were in the area.
