Captain Dave reports mirror glass, lake-smooth conditions in the Channel today with blue skies and sunshine. Sightings included 5+ humpback whales and 5000 long-beaked common dolphins.
Masses of common dolphins located the Condor Express about 8 miles offshore and huge feeding pods with sea birds were around everywhere in the Channel. The past few days have been near record-setting for the amount of common dolphins.
When we were surrounded by dolphins and birds, southwest of Platform Habitat, 2 individual humpback whales were located. One was a large adult, the other a smaller juvenile whale. With ideal sea and sky conditions the sightings were fabulous.
Further west 2 additional individual adult whales were observed. One laid down a monster breach within good visual range. Again, wonderful looks of both individuals were had. Dolphins, of course, were everywhere.
A bit to the southeast we closely watched a juvenile whale (with dolphins). It should be noted that we saw additional spouts in the distance and just could not reach all of the whales on one trip.
