2021 03-27 SB CHANNEL & COAST
Captain Dave reports “totally drop dead gorgeous conditions all day,” for all three trips (9a, 12n, and 3p). Translation: blue skies, bright sun and calm seas. Our total sightings today were equally “gorgeous:” 11 gray whales, 2 humpback whales and 6 Dall’s porpoise. (It’s been a while since we last saw Dall’s porpoise!)
The morning excursion ran deep into the Channel and well into The Lanes. Here we watched 2 large adult humpback whales. On the way out to the humpbacks a small pod of Dall’s porpoise located the Condor Express.
The noon trip headed up the coast and located a group of 3 gray whales about 2 miles off Hendry’s Beach. After this group was closely watched, Dave turned offshore and then back to the east where a second group of 3 grays were found. All these grays and beautiful conditions too!
The afternoon whale watch again headed up the coast and found 3 more gray whales about a mile or so off Leadbetter. We followed along and had great looks until we reached More Mesa. Turning outside and east we found ourselves near the nearshore oil rig line. Here we watched our final 2 gray whales of the day, one large adult and one small juvenile.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
