Captain Dave took the mighty Condor Express on explorations that included both sides of the Santa Barbara Channel. The result of these efforts included 2 humpback whales and 1,000 long-beaked common dolphins. The skies were sunny in Santa Barbara and again at Santa Cruz Island, but were a bit foggy in the mid-Channel region.
On the way to the southwest the Condor encountered group after group of dolphins that came and played around the boat. At this point we were 6 or 7 miles south of UCSB. Finally, Dave’s patient explorations of the dolphins resulted in the discovery of humpback whales. Great sightings were had by all.
A nice run over to Santa Cruz Island and a cruise along the northwestern sea cliffs culminated with a trip inside the mouth of the beautiful, world-famous Painted Cave. Dave shared some of his extensive knowledge of the island and its pre-history, geology, and current restoration.
On the way home additional dolphins were found about 6 miles out from Santa Barbara harbor.
