Image: a humpback whale is shown vertically lunge-feeding.

Captain Dave and the crew ran a single, 12n, excursion. Skies went from a high overcast to mostly sunny; winds were minimal. Sightings were good: 7 humpback whales.
The first whales we watched were 5 mile south of the harbor where we saw a mother humpback and her calf. We’d end up seeing them twice (but included only once in the totals for the trip). The mom did 3 or 4 wonderful vertical lunges while the little calf did some rolling around. During the second encounter with this pair, the little calf did a tail-throw impression…practicing to be and adult.
Nearby there were three adults. One of them did a series of sideways lunges on the surface. Two very large breaches were seen by a distant pair of humpbacks near the end of our time.
