Captain Dave and his crew ran 9a and 12n trips today with severe dense fog that persisted until around 1p. Despite this lack of visibility, sightings included: 1000 long-beaked common dolphins and 5 gray whales.
Both trips saw the “visitor” harbor gray whale. It continues to bottom feed in and around the mouth of the harbor near the Sandspit area.
The common dolphins were located during the morning on the south side of the Carpinteria oil rigs. They were very boat friendly and easy to watch, which was helpful given the fog.
After the fog lifted, about half-way through the noon expedition, we moved offshore and found a group of 4 northbound adult whales. They had a regular and semi-short dive cycle, and showed plenty of tail flukes. Great looks were had by all.
