The marine layer burned off and it became sunny and stayed that way all day. Seas were very calm. Sightings for the day included 4 humpback whales, 5 bottlenose dolphins and 3000 long-beaked common dolphins. Near the harbor entrance, we followed five bottlenose dolphins into the East Beach anchorage. There were two mothers with their calves, and a single large male in the group. (We guessed it was a male because it was upside-down under the females most of the time). We got great looks and it was a wonderful start to the trip. From here Captain Dave headed south to the edge of The Lanes. Most all of the action was located about 10 miles offshore.
We first located many groups of common dolphins, in fact they were around us all day long. There were groups of 100 individuals, and there were groups of 500 individuals. Soon we came to a spot where we found four whales. They started out about a mile apart, then came together, only to drift off again individually. There were three large adults and one small juvenile. One of the adults spent a considerable amount of time kelping, including time upside down in the vegetation. It’s been a little while since we’ve had such good kelping , and it’s always fun to see. As we approached this group originally, the juvenile was engaged in lots of tail-throwing and pect-slapping.
