Humpback mom and calf do a simultaneous double breach!

2018 08-27 SB Channel

Outstanding wildlife sightings were experienced today with 1500 long-beaked common dolphins, 700 California sea lions, 100 offshore bottlenose dolphins and 4 humpback whales.  The big news was that our little friend, the humpback calf and its mother were back with us today and very active.

Skies were overcast until the sun broke through in the late morning.  Seas were a little bumpy and a fresh breeze blew some whitecaps around in the Channel.  The first wildlife encounter was with a large herd of offshore bottlenose dolphins that were spread over an area more than a mile long.  These bottlenose were very active, many aerial displays were seen, and they came right up to the Condor Express.  They surfed our bow, side and stern waves just like their smaller cousins, the common dolphins.

The Santa Rosa Island hot spot was firing off again today with huge numbers of common dolphins, sea lions and sea birds in the area.  As previously mentioned, among the 4 whales watched we saw the same large mother with her tiny calf that has been around all week.  The little calf rolled around a lot and did some tail stands. Out of the blue, both mother and calf did a simultaneous double (full body) breach within 100 yards or so of the boat.  It was a rarely seen spectacular display.
